Building on the established reputation of the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC), the second edition offers an even more powerful family of tools to help assess the behaviours and emotions of preschool through college-age individuals. The Behavior Assessment System for Children—Second Edition (BASC–2) enables assessment from three vantage points—teacher, self, and parent/caregiver—to help ensure a balanced evaluation.

Multi-Dimensional Approach Presents a Balanced Perspective

The BASC–2 provides the most comprehensive rating scales available. Here are some advantages that you will enjoy:

  • Unlike many other assessments of behaviour and emotions, the BASC–2 was constructed using both an empirical and theoretical approach.
  • This outstanding system is respected for its developmental sensitivity, differentiating between behaviours of children and adolescents.
  • The BASC–2 stands apart in providing both combined-sex and separate-sex norms.

School psychologists, clinicians, and other professionals can use the BASC–2 system to help:

  • Evaluate and address behavioural and emotional issues that may impede an individual's ability to thrive in home and school environments
  • Meet guidelines for identifying strengths and weaknesses and diagnostic testing a differentiated instruction and progress monitoring
  • Differentiate between hyperactivity and attention problems with one efficient instrument
  • Monitor treatment interventions and outcomes

Key Features

The BASC–2 system offers:

  • Broad content coverage that assesses both behavioural strengths and weaknesses
  • Complementary components that help professionals compare information from multiple sources and achieve reliable, accurate diagnoses
  • Validity indexes to help clinicians detect careless or untruthful responding, misunderstanding, or other threats to response validity
  • Strong psychometric properties
  • Test items that are easy to respond to and that result in easily interpretable scales
  • Test items that are written at a low reading level, with audio CD recordings available for individuals with reading difficulties
  • Remote-On Screen Administration (R-OSA) capability—assessments can be emailed to clients, teachers, or parents, so that the assessment can be completed at their own location

System Components

The BASC–2 helps you evaluate the child's behaviour from Teacher, Parent, and Self perspectives to provide a more balanced picture.

Teacher Perspective:

  • Teacher Rating Scales (TRS)—Help measure adaptive and problem behaviours in preschool or school settings. Teachers or other qualified observers can complete forms at three age levels—preschool (ages 2 to 5), child (ages 6 to 11), and adolescent (ages 12 to 21)—in approximately 10 to 20 minutes. The forms describe specific behaviours that are rated on a four-point scale of frequency, ranging from “Never” to “Almost Always.” The TRS contain 100 to 139 items. All clinical and adaptive scales are listed in the chart on page 119. Validity and response set indexes used to help judge the quality of completed forms are also available.
  • Student Observation System (SOS)—Enables clinicians and other qualified observers to code and record direct observations of a child's behaviour in a classroom setting. The observer can objectively rate a wide range of behaviours, using momentary time sampling during three-second intervals spaced 30 seconds apart. The SOS assesses both adaptive and maladaptive behaviours, from positive peer interaction to repetitive motor movements. This tool can be employed for the direct observation portion of a functional behaviour assessment and can be used singly or with other BASC–2 components. The SOS form also is included in the BASC–2 Portable Observation Program. (see below).
  • Portable Observation Program (POP)—Designed to conduct behaviour observations more efficiently by enabling information to be recorded directly onto a laptop. Easy to learn and use, this powerful computer program eliminates the hazzle of juggling paper, pen, and stopwatch—so that the observer can focus on the critical details. The Student Observation System (see above) is incorporated in the program.

Parent Perspective:

  • Parent Rating Scales (PRS)—Help measure both adaptive and problem behaviours in community and home settings. Parents or caregivers can complete forms at three age levels—preschool (ages 2 to 5), child (ages 6 to 11), and adolescent (ages 12 to 21)—in approximately 10 to 20 minutes. The PRS contain 134-160 items and uses a four-choice response format. All clinical and adaptive scales are listed in the chart below. Validity and response set indexes used to help judge the quality of completed forms are also available. This form requires approximately a fourth-grade reading level for completion.

Self-Perspective:

  • Structured Developmental History (SDH)—Offers a comprehensive history and background survey that supplies a thorough review of social, psychological, developmental, educational, and medical information on the child.
  • Self-Report of Personality-Interview (SRP-I)—Designed for use with children ages 6:0–7:0, the SRP-I form takes only about 20 minutes to complete. Children provide yes/no answers to questions asked by the examiner who records responses on a convenient checklist.
  • Self-Report of Personality (SRP)—Helps provide insight into an individual's thoughts and feelings. Forms are available for three age levels: child (ages 8–11 years), adolescent (ages 12–21 years), and college (ages 18–25 years). In addition to the clinical and adaptive scales listed below, validity indexes are provided to help determine the quality of completed forms.
